11/13/2019 | Men's Tennis
Tucson, Ariz.- The ITA Rankings have been updated and Arizona has placed three of its members on that list. Sophomore Jonas Ziverts and junior Filip Malbasic were joined by senior Alejandro Reguant. This is the first time in program history that Arizona has had three of its members on the ITA Singles Rankings list at the same time.
Malbasic has had a fantastic fall season, going 9-2 in singles play, including a ranked win. In addition, he also won the Southern California Intercollegiates last weekend. He started the fall season ranked No. 46 and has jumped ten places to be ranked No. 36, a career-high for Malbasic. Head Coach Clancy Shields said about Malbasic, "Filip has been a rock here for us. He is a true competitor, and he has certainly put in the work required to be an elite player. I'm very happy to see him rewarded for his efforts and I believe he will continue to make progress in these next few months. This career high ranking for him will only be a starting point for the great things ahead."
Ziverts remains ranked after a decent fall season, going 6-5 in singles play and winning two ranked matches. He is now ranked No. 61 in the ITA Singles Rankings. Head Coach Clancy Shields said about Ziverts, "Jonas is still a freshman to me. He started school in January so this is his first fall season with us. It is impressive to see how he has been able to establish himself so early as one of the best college tennis players in the country. We all know he is just scratching the surface here, and the best is yet to come for him."
Reguant gets onto the ITA Rankings for the first time this year after achieving a 7-4 record in singles and 5-3 in doubles. He has been on the ITA rankings before, but his No. 86 ranking is a career-high. Shields was especially proud of Reguant saying, "I'm overjoyed to see Alejandro in the rankings. He has worked his tail off these past three years to become this player. It is very rewarding to see his transformation, and I know that the player he has become is not by any random stroke of luck. Alejandro brings it everyday, he is consistent in his daily approach, and has the ability to stay in the moment unlike many players. Alejandro is also a tremendous leader who puts the team first and leads by example. I'm very happy our team can see our leader amongst the very best in our sport."
Big Numbers
9- Only nine teams have three or more members on the ITA Rankings list and Arizona has become on of them. As the program looks into the spring season, they will look to carry this momentum to carry them to the top. Clancy Shields said this about the rankings, "Excited to see some of our players making waves on the national scene. These three individuals have worked hard on their games and deserve this recognition. It takes a lot to be an elite player, and these three young men have put in the time and effort to be amongst the best in the country."
