TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Gymnastics opened their 2020 season with the annual GymCat Showcase on Sunday in McKale Center.
The GymCats competed on all four events. This event was the first time that Arizona's freshmen,
Mackenzie Barile, Zaza Brovedani, Malia Hargrove, Sirena Linton, Danielle Nosek, Libby Orman, and
Avery Stauffacher were able to experience the energy in McKale Center and see the fans.
The GymCat fans were excited to see seniors
Christina Berg, Courtney Cowles, Haylie Hendrickson, Jenny Leung, and
Heather Swanson return to the floor for their last Showcase. The seniors have proven to be strong competitors for the Cats, and the team and coaches are looking forward to watching them compete for their final season.
Coaches Corner
"Overall, the afternoon was very good," head coach
John Court said. "We were able to execute several routines throughout the night and only had one miss, which is really good. We know where we need to improve and at the end of the day; the Showcase is a step in our training plan. Nothing is supposed to be perfect, so it's great to have room to improve. It was awesome to have our community, season ticket holders, and guest judges come in and give the team something that they haven't had to deal with. We're looking forward to training the next couple of weeks and going to LSU on January 3rd."
"Beam was really good today and it was good to get out there in front of fans," assistant coach
Taylor Spears said. "We practiced beam in McKale last weekend, but today was the first time the team saw all the events set up and a full crowd, so we saw some jitters but I'm glad we were able to get those out. Even though we had a few wobbles here and there, there was a lot of fight. They didn't let small mistakes bother them. This is something we have definitely improved on in practice, so it was great to see that same fight in a meet atmosphere. I'm really proud of how the team did today."
"I think the bars performance was solid," assistant coach
David McCreary said. "It was the first time in McKale in front of fans for the freshman. We've had a really good preseason so far when we do intrasquads on bars and now we're trying to get to the fine details on each of the gymnasts and once we're there, we're going to be really good."
