04/15/2019 | Men's Golf
SANTA CRUZ, Calif.- The Arizona men's golf program wrapped up day one of the 73rd Western Intercollegiate in eighth place, with a score of 359 nine-over par. Leading the Cats are juniors Brad Reeves and Briggs Duce, who both are tied in 21st.
"Our team did a very good job managing the things we can control today," said head coach Jim Anderson. "Our composure was great and playing the challenging setup in the weather we we saw in the afternoon was not easy. We got better as the day went on and we played played well with a new variable being on live television."
Duce and Reeves are both one over par, tabbing a 71 in the first round of the tournament. Combined, the juniors tallied five birdies on the day.
Senior Ethan Marcus and junior David Laskin are tied up in 31st, with a score of 72 (+1). Marcus played a strong back nine, tabbing four birdies on holes 11, 13, 16, and 17. Laskin was a steady presence in the lineup, making par 14 times, the second most in the competition.
Sophomore Trevor Werbylo scored a 73 (+3) placing him in a tie for 43rd. Sophomore Tianlang Guan finished the day tied in 79th with a 79 (+9).
"Briggs and Ethan set a great tone and fought hard in the front," said Anderson. "Dave found great rhythm at the finish and Brad was very solid all day. Tomorrow will be a great day if we pick up where we left off and play the par-five's a little better."
