Cats Through to Match Play at NCAA Championships
05/20/2019 | Women's Golf
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Senior Bianca Pagdanganan secured her second straight top-three finish at the NCAA National Championships Monday and the Arizona Wildcats advanced to the Match Play portion of the tournament at the Blessings Golf Club.
Arizona finished the 54-hole stroke play portion of the tournament in sixth place at 28-over par with the top eight teams advancing to Match Play. The Wildcats, who are the defending National Champions, are currently the No. 6 seed and would open Match Play against No. 3 USC.
Play was suspended due to darkness shortly after 8 p.m., local time Monday and six teams still have to finish up stroke play. If results hold, which they are likely to with just a couple of holes to finish, the Cats would open Match Play against the Trojans in the three-six matchup. The Wildcats were seeded No. 8 last year en route to their national championship.
Pagdanganan, who finished in second place last year, finished in third this year at 2-under. Pagdanganan shot a 1-over 74 on Monday to close out play and secure a second straight top-three finish. Pagdanganan bogeyed three of her first five holes, but recovered beautifully, picking up birdies on holes seven, nine and 13 to get back to even par for the day.
After a bogey at 14, Pagdanganan birdied 16, before a bogey at 17 and a par at 18 for an even-par 36 on the back nine.
The senior will now look to lead her squad in Match Play for the second straight year. The Cats were able to get through in the top eight thanks to three solid days of play from Pagdanganan, Haley Moore, Yu-Sang Hou, Ya Chun Chang and Sandra Nordaas.
Moore finished the tournament tied for 15th at 5-over par. She shot a 76 on the final day. The highlight of her round came at the par-fifth 15th hole. Moore used a resourceful second shot to the green to cash in an eagle putt on the 477-yard hole. She converted pars on 17 and 18 to shoot an even-par 36 on the back nine.
Hou shot a 3-over par 76 and is tied for 34th in the tournament. Chang is tied for 74th and Nordaas is tied for 129th.
The quarterfinals Monday morning will begin quickly after the stroke play portion of the tournament is officially completed.
