Student-Athletes of the Month Named for August

TUCSON, Ariz. – Women's Basketball's Aari McDonald, Women's Track and Field's Diana Ramos, Men's Track and Field's Justin Lewis, and Men's Golf's Santeri Lehesmaa have been honored as the student-athletes of the month for August.
 
These students have been honored for their commitment to earning their undergraduate degree, the ability to maximize their academic potential, and their dedication to academic improvement and growth.
 
These students have been chosen by the C.A.T.S Academic staff.
 
McDonald is a junior from Fresno, California, who had a huge presence for the Wildcats. She is Arizona's single-season scoring record holder with 890 points, and was named WNIT MVP last year. McDonald is majoring in Sociology and has excelled both on and off the court.
 
"Aari is coming off a solid year both academically and athletically and to top it off, she had her best summer on record," said learning specialist Sarah Barber. "There is no doubt that Aari is putting in the work to find success in the classroom. She has grown so much since stepping foot on campus and I am so proud of her academic achievements!"

Ramos is a rising sophomore from Guatire Miran, Venezuela. Ramos is majoring in Journalism and competes in the high jump for the Cats. As a freshman, Ramos took sixth place at the Pac-12 Championships and qualified for the NCAA West Region Championships in the high jump. She set her personal best on April 27 when she jumped 1.77m (5-9.75) at the Desert Heat Classic.
 
"Diana came to college early as a mid-year enrollee," said learning specialist Corey Talley. "She has truly adjusted well and been a model student-athlete for others to follow. She has already found a great balance of performing well in the classroom and on the track. She has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and looks to continue this streak."
 
Lewis is a senior from Lynn, Massachusetts, who is majoring in Economy and Industry. Lewis, who specializes in the high jump, finished in sixth place at the Pac-12 Championships and qualified for the NCAA West Region Championships. He jumped a personal best of 2.14m (7-0.25) at the Jim Click Shootout on April 6. 
 
"Justin is a rising senior that had a rough year last year that made this summer very critical," learning specialist Corey Talley said. "Even though he was home for half of summer he was able to stay organized and productive with his online courses. Justin truly rose to the challenge and was able put in the work to earn a perfect 4.0 GPA over the summer. He hopes to capitalize on this summer momentum and have a great year in the classroom."
 
Lehesmaa is a sophomore from Helsinki, Finland. Last season, Lehesmaa played in four events, spanning 12 rounds for the Wildcats. Lehesmaa is also a Pre-Business major who takes both school and sports very serious.
 
"Santeri Lehesmaa is a sophomore on the Men's Golf team from Finland and is a Pre-Business major who has excelled in the classroom and on the golf course," learning specialist Jenn Mewes said. "Being an international student can be a challenging transition, but Santeri has managed that transition well and is an outstanding representative of our student athletes."
