TUCSON, Ariz. --
Taryne Mowatt's trophy case got a little more crowded on Thursday night. The 2007 Women's College World Series Most Valuable Player, two-time ESPY winner, All-American pitcher and current Wildcat pitching coach was inducted into the Arizona Athletics Hall of Fame on Thursday night in a ceremony at La Paloma Resort.
Mowatt was one of seven former Wildcat players and coaches inducted. The Arizona Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2019 included Joan Bonvincini (women's basketball, 1991-2008), Antoine Cason (football, 2004-2007), May Mickelsen (rifle, 1961-1965), Stephen Mikulic (baseball, 1970-1971), Mowatt (softball, 2004-2008), Dan Schneider (baseball, 1961-1962) and Alison Walshe (women's golf, 2006-2008).
In her four seasons at Arizona, Mowatt put together one of the most memorable careers in UA softball history, helping lead Arizona to back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007, the latter of which saw the junior pitcher put together one of the most amazing weeks the sport has ever seen. Mowatt earned MVP honors after setting WCWS records in innings pitched (60), strikeouts (76) and complete games (8), while leading the Wildcats' to their eighth NCAA Championship. She later won a pair of ESPYs for her performance.
Mowatt, a second-team All-American in 2007, won exactly 100 games in her UA career. Her 100-33 career record ranks seventh in UA history. She is second in Arizona history in both strikeouts (1,267) and innings pitched (877.2). She threw six no-hitters, including a perfect game.
Her 42 victories, 522 strikeouts and 370.0 innings pitched in 2007 remain Pac-12 records. In all, Mowatt posted a 1.54 ERA over 147 appearances as a Wildcat.
Mowatt, who enters her third season back in Tucson as Arizona's pitching coach in 2019-20, has made an immediate impact on UA's pitchers in her time on the staff. In her two seasons back at Arizona, the Wildcats have enjoyed their best consecutive pitching seasons since Mowatt was in the circle. Arizona has posted back-to-back seasons of sub-2.00 ERAs, something that had not been accomplished before she arrived since 2007 and 2008, Mowatt's junior and senior seasons. In 2019, Mowatt helped
Taylor McQuillin to first-team All-America honors and UA's 1.61 team ERA, which ranked sixth nationally, was a big reason Arizona returned to Oklahoma City for its 23rd Women's College World Series appearance.
Mowatt became Arizona softball's 24th alumna to make the Arizona Athletics Hall of Fame. All eight national championship teams, including Mowatt's 2006 and 2007 teams, are also in the Hall of Fame.
