Wildcats in Control After Opening Day of Arizona Intercollegiate
01/27/2020 | Men's Golf
TUCSON -- TUCSON – The Arizona Wildcats had a strong opening day at the 40th Arizona Collegiate Monday at Sewailo Golf Club. Coach Jim Anderson's squad will enter the second day with a six-stroke lead over second place Baylor.
Arizona finished the day at -10, while Baylor posted a score of 4-under. The entire field was unable to complete the second round Monday due to darkness and will play the final few holes Tuesday morning before opening the third and final round.
The Wildcats, however, were able to complete both rounds of play Monday and will open play Tuesday with the third round. Arizona shot a 275 in the first round and a 283 in the second round.
"I was very proud of our team today," Anderson said. "We didn't play flawless golf and the conditions on the course with wind in the afternoon made scoring difficult. The team did a great job managing emotions and we demonstrated great bounce back throughout our rounds. Tomorrow will be a fun day because we get to play with a lead in a tournament we know how to win."
The squad was led by junior Trevor Werbylo, who will enter the final round in the lead at six-under. Werbylo was six-under through the first round and then battled the wind in the afternoon round to post an even-par score of 71 with seven birdies on his card. Werbylo has a one-shot lead over Washington's Henry Lee, Mississippi State's Garrett Johnson and UTSA's Adam House, who are all at five-under.
"Trevor's round this morning was outstanding," Anderson said. "He played almost the same golf in the afternoon. We're never surprised when he plays this well, and it was a pleasure to watch today."
Werbylo wasn't the only Wildcat to have a strong opening day. Brad Reeves fired rounds of 69 in the first and second round. He is four-under, sitting in fifth place. Senior Briggs Duce also had a strong day and is two-under for the tournament, tied for seventh place.
Senior David Laskin finished the day at three-over par, tied for 27th place. Freshman Chase Sienkiewicz is four-over for the tournament and tied for 38th.
Arizona got off to a hot start in the morning, shooting nine-under as a team. Werbylo led the way with a six-under 65 in the opening round. He shot a bogey-free round and recorded six birdies on his card. Duce and Reeves were both under par as well in the first round, posting matching 69s. Both players had five birdies in their round and overcame a double bogey.
In the second round, Reeves posted the best score for the Wildcats, shooting his second 69 of the day. Werbylo and Duce each shot even par, while Laskin shot a one-over 72.
The Wildcats are looking for their third straight Arizona Intercollegiate championship, after winning in 2018 and 2019. Werbylo is aiming to be Arizona's first individual champion at the event since Rich Saferian won in 2010. Since moving to Sewailo in 2014, Arizona has not had an individual champion.
Arizona also had four players compete as individuals on Monday. Santeri Lehesmaa and Hayden Sayre are both at eight-over, while Aidric Chan is nine-over. Drake Mendenhall is +18.
