TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona cross country has completed its staff for the 2020-21 season as the program will be led by the trio of Dave Murray,
Bernard Lagat and Doug Keen.
Â
Lagat, one of the most decorated distance runners of all time, has been a volunteer assistant coach at Arizona for 15 years. The 11-time All-American and two-time medalist at the Olympic Games is considered an American distance running legend as he has competed in five Olympic Games and qualified for the 2020 Olympics earlier this year.
Â
"I am honored to join
Fred Harvey and be a part of the Arizona cross country and track & field program," Lagat said. "Having been a volunteer assistant coach for the last 15 years, I have gotten to know many of the great student-athletes that continue to proudly represent the University of Arizona. I look forward to passing on the knowledge and experiences that I have gained as a student-athlete and professional. It is a privilege for me to follow in coach Li's footsteps and lead the next generation of Wildcats to success on and off the track."
Â
Lagat won a silver medal in the 1500m at the 2004 Olympics and won a bronze medal in the 1500m at the 2000 Olympics while finishing in fourth in the 5K at the 2012 Olympics and fifth in the 5K at the 2016 Olympics. He has also won two gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal at the World Championships.
Â
Off the track, Lagat has served as a chair member of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) and the United States Track & Field Advisory Boards.
Â
Keen, who competed as a distance runner at the University of Arkansas, was a two-time national champion as he was a member of the 1986 cross country national championship team and the 1987 indoor track & field national championship team.
Â
Considered one of the best coaches in Arizona high school track & field and cross country, Keen led Catalina Foothills to four 4A-I state titles as head coach in 2006, 2008 and 2009 and 2010. While at Catalina Foothills, Keen coached Dylan Souza to multiple individual state championships and would go on to compete for Arizona. Keen is also currently a professor at the University of Arizona.
Â
"I want to thank
Fred Harvey for thinking of me for this position," Keen said. "I am excited for the opportunity to work with this coaching staff and I am honored to be a part of this program. I'm looking forward to mentoring all of our student-athletes and help them achieve their goals as a team and as individuals."
Â
Murray was previously head coach and director of Arizona cross country and track and field from 1968-2002, building one of the top programs in the nation during that time. Under his direction, Arizona produced 28 individual national champions, nine Pac-10 champions and nearly 30 Olympians. Additionally, Arizona student-athletes earned All-America honors 166 times in both cross country and track and field.
Â
"I am a Wildcat through and through and I will do anything I can do to help the program," Murray said. "Bernard and Doug are going to be great coaches, and I am looking forward to helping them in any way I can, whether that is being a counselor, a mentor, or providing any coaching tips to them."
Â
Murray was named Pac-10 Cross Country Coach of the year eight times and the District VIII/West Region Cross Country Coach of the year six times and was also named the NCAA Men's Cross Country of the Year in 1984. He is a member of the University of Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, the Drake Relays Hall of Fame and the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame.
Â
"Coach Dave Murray will be a great mentor to not only the student-athletes, but the coaches as well," said director of track and field & cross country
Fred Harvey. "His knowledge of Arizona Track & Field and Cross Country is priceless.
Bernard Lagat is one of the world's all-time great distance runners and will bring a level of comfort and confidence to our student-athletes since he has been in the program for over 15 years and understands their training methodology. Doug Keen brings a level of excitement as well as an understanding of building cross country teams. His ability to structure four Arizona High School State Cross Country Championship teams will be instrumental as we prepare for an upcoming spring cross country and track & field season."
