02/22/2020 | Men's Golf
LIHUE, Hawaii – The Arizona Wildcats completed play at the John Burns Intercollegiate on Saturday, fighting to a top six finish as a team.
Arizona shot -1 on the final day and finished the tournament +2, tied with three other teams for sixth place. Texas A&M shot 12-under on the final day to finish -19 for the tournament and capture the championship. Between the fall and spring seasons, Arizona has finished in the top six in all six tournaments it has competed in.
Junior Trevor Werbylo led the way for the Cats on the weekend, finishing at -3, tied for 12th place. It marks his fifth Top 20 finish in six competitions this year. Werbylo shot a two-under 70 on Saturday to close out the tournament. He played the four par fives at three-under in his final round and totaled five birdies on his scorecard.
Senior Briggs Duce also secured a Top 20 finish. Duce finished the tournament at -2, tied for 15th place. He shot a one-under 71 in the final round and also has five Top 20 finishes to his credit this year. Duce had four birdies in his final round.
"Today was a little bit of a roller coaster," coach Jim Anderson said. "We took care of our par fives early but lost strokes slowly over the course of the round. We struggled to get momentum each day. Trevor was again solid and he performed well despite not putting his very best. Briggs too is very reliable and did a lot of great things including three rounds at par or better. I think we were prepared, but we made a few careless mistakes. The next event will be in a climate familiar to our team and we will prepare to bounce back."
Senior David Laskin logged an eagle in his round Saturday and shot an even par 72. He finished the tournament +5, tied for 56th. Playing as an individual, freshman Aidric Chan also shot even par 72 and finished +6 for the tournament. Senior Brad Reeves shot a 74 on Saturday and tied with Chan in 66th place. Freshman Chase Sienkiewicz finished the tournament at +10.
The Wildcats will now travel back to Tucson for a few days before traveling to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to participate in the Cabo Collegiate, which begins March 1.
