CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – The Arizona Wildcats men's golf team maintained its position in first place Monday in the second round of play at the Cabo Collegiate. The Wildcats shot nine-under par to move to -15 on the tournament.
Arizona, ranked No. 14 in the latest Golfstat national rankings, has a three-shot lead over Vanderbilt, who is in second place at -12. Arizona State is in third at -12. The teams will wrap up play Tuesday morning at 9 a.m., where the Cats will try to capture the championship.
Additionally, junior Trevor Werbylo fired a 69 and is tied for first on the individual leaderboard at -7. He's tied with Stanford's Barclay Brown and Baylor's Johnny Keefer at the top. Werbylo is seeking his first collegiate win.
"We had another great day today," Coach Jim Anderson said. "The course presented a challenge late in the round when the winds picked up. Our team's composure and patience allowed us to make mistakes and bounce back with some birdies to finish. Tomorrow, we will focus on one shot at a time and we know there is more to come for this team. Trevor continues to do the things that make him great. He is calm, cool and collected on the course and deserves every opportunity to be in this position."
Four out of the five golfers in Arizona's lineup Monday finished under par on the round. Senior David Laskin had the best day with a four-under, 67. Laskin picked up five birdies to just one bogey on the day. He is -3 for the tournament and tied for 15th.
"David was outstanding today with a huge round," Anderson said.
Laskin is tied at -3 with freshman Aidric Chan, who shot a one-under 70 to back up his opening round 69. Briggs Duce is tied for 27th at even par after a two-under 69 on Monday. Senior Brad Reeves is tied for 65th at eight-over.
