TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats women's golf team jumped out to a huge lead at the Wildcat Invitational at Sewailo Golf Club on Monday, shooting -18 through the first two rounds of the team's home tournament.
The Wildcats have a 23-shot lead over second-place New Mexico State. The Aggies are +5, followed by Oregon at +6.
Arizona was paced by freshman
Vivian Hou on the opening day. She opened the tournament with a five-under 67, before shooting a 69 in the second round. At -8, Hou is tied for first with teammate
Kailie Vongsaga, who is playing as individual and is also eight-under for the tournament.
Hou had three birdies and an eagle on her front nine in the first round and was out in 31. She overcame a double bogey on the back nine with a pair of birdies to shoot even par on the back. She again shot a 31 on the front nine in the second round, carding five birdies to no bogeys. She also birdied No. 11, before finishing with her 69 and in a deadlock with Vongsaga.
Vongsaga, also a freshman from Diamond Bar, California, had five birdies to one bogey in the opening round to shoot a four-under 68. She replicated the 68 in the afternoon in the second round as well, carding six birdies to two bogeys. She finished on the 11
th hole and birdied to move into a tie with Hou, who had already finished her second 18.
A third freshman,
Gile Bite Starkute, is also in the hunt for the Wildcats. She is in third place at five-under, three shots behind Hou and Vongsaga. In the opening round, Starkute shot a 69 with five birdies on her card. She used a hot start in round two to shoot a 70 and get to -5 for the tournament.
Two shots behind Starkute in fourth place is Vivian's older sister,
Yu-Sang Hou, who is at -3 through 36 holes.
Ya Chun Chang is one shot behind her at -2. After an opening round 73, Chang shot a three-under 69 in the second round to get into the red for the tournament and in contention. Hou shot one-under in the first round and two-under in the second to get in the mix. Playing as an individual like Vongsaga,
Hollie Muse is also at -3 for the tournament and tied for fourth with Yu-Sang. Muse shot a strong round of 68 in the second round after an opening-round 73.
Therese Warner is tied for 15
th at +2 and shot a one-under 71 in the second round.
