SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Arizona's trio of underclassmen participated in their second event of the season as individuals in the two-day Lamkin Invitational as sophomore
Therese Warner scored one of the best outings of her career with a fifth-place finish at 4-over par. Warner was joined by
Gile Bite Starkute who also posted a career best as the sophomore shot 9-over, placing in a tie for 10
th.
"Therese played solid this week in tough conditions," said head coach
Laura Ianello. "The golf course was playing difficult, and we saw a lot of progress in her game this week, especially with her putting. Gile also showed a lot of promised with her 2-over par score today. I foresee some great things ahead for our team and hopefully some victories as well."
By finishing the event tied for fifth, Warner posted her best finish in a tournament format of her career after finishing 10
th in the 2019 Pac-12 Preview tournament in Hawai'i. She also earned a point for Arizona in match play in the East Lake Cup versus Duke during her freshman season. The sophomore did her best work on the par-5 holes, finishing fourth among all players at 3-under par for the tournament on those holes.
Starkute capped her strong showing by shooting 2-over par on the final day and finishing the event tied for fourth among all players in par-3 scoring while leading the field with 39 pars. Her 10
th place finish was the highest of her young career, completing her first ever top-20 finish. Freshman
Maya Benita also participated for the Wildcats in San Diego, completing her second ever college event in 50th place.
The Wildcats are scheduled to participate in the Talking Stick Invitational in Scottsdale, beginning on February 15 as the program aims to incorporate more members on its roster. Three of Arizona's returners are in the process of rejoining the program after playing in an event in their home country of Taiwan last month.
