TUCSON, Ariz. -- In its return to the friendly confines of McKale Center, Arizona Volleyball defeated Colorado in four sets (27-25, 22-25, 25-9, 25-22) for Arizona's sixth consecutive win in McKale Center.
Arizona's serving and defense led the way in the match for the Cats, who set season highs in both aces (10) and blocks (12) in the four-set victory.
Kamaile Hiapo had a career-most four aces for the Cats while both
Zyonna Fellows and
Merle Weidt collected five blocks apiece. Arizona's 10 aces were its most since August 24, 2018 vs. CSUN (12).
Defensively, the Wildcats held Colorado to .138 hitting for the match, out-blocking the Buffaloes 12.0-4.0 and out-digging them 57-52. Three different Wildcats had double-digit digs, led by Hiapo's 12, while
Paige Whipple and
Malina Kalei Ua has 11 apiece.
Whipple's 11 digs were apart of another double-double for the senior, who is coming on strong in the second half of the season. Whipple had a season-high 15 kills to lead the team and had just two errors in a team-most 39 swings (.333). Whipple's 15 kills were one more then her previous season-high of 14 set last Sunday at Arizona State. They also moved her into a tie for 12th place in Arizona history with 1,123 career kills with associate head coach
Charita Stubbs (then Charita Johnson).
Weidt continued her strong stretch as well for the Cats, posting 10 kills on 16 error-free swings (.625) and tied a season-high with five blocks. It was her fifth consecutive start filling in for
China Rai Crouch, who remained out with a concussion.
The Wildcats improved to 6-9 on the season while Colorado dropped to 5-8. The teams meet once again on Sunday at noon MST.
