Wildcats Pick Up Seven Event Wins at Outdoor Season Opener

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Wildcats kicked off the 2021 Outdoor Season on Friday at day one of the Willie Williams Classic, picking up seven event wins.

Highlights
Jordan Geist got the win in the hammer throw with a mark of 60.76m (199-4). Jakob Chamberlin and Jaisen Brown picked up new PRs in the event. On the women's side, freshman Ava David had a strong showing in her first collegiate meet, placing third in the hammer throw with a mark of 55.07m (180-8). Her throw is good for the tenth best hammer throw mark in school history. 

Justice Summerset won the men's high jump with a clearance of 2.16m (7-1). 

Umajesty Williams led the men's 200m crew with a second place finish and a time of 20.88. He was followed by Johnnie Blockburger in fourth place with a PR time of 21.13. Trevor Volpe (21.28) and Trent Stimac (21.48) also clocked PRs, finishing fifth and sixth. Tayvian Cunningham came in eighth with a time of 21.51.

In her first race since 2019, Neysia Howard won the 200m dash with a time of 24.23. Skylar Sieben was the next top finisher in third place, followed by Grace Reinholz in sixth.

Megan Dulaney won the women's shot put contest with a mark of 14.41m (47-3.5). Jordan Spradlin finished fifth.

Kaelyn Shipley won the women's javelin throw with a mark of 50.20m (164-8), just shy of a new PR.

Chamberlin placed second in the men's discus with a mark of 54.25m (178-0). Geist finished fourth with a throw of 53.06m (174-1). Youssef Koudssi (11th) and Zach Landa (13th) also made their collegiate debuts in this event.

Tiana Poirier-Shelton placed fifth in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.82m (19-1.25).

Shem Kemboi won the men's 5k, leading the Wildcats who swept the top five spots. On the women's side, Bailey Johnson picked up the event win, competing against her teammates Grace Driskill and Peyton Heiden.

The Cats will be back for day two on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. MST, beginning with the men's shot put.
