Cats Sweep #15 Washington State to Finish Regular Season

PULLMAN, Wash. -- In the final regular season match of the 2020-21 season, the Wildcats picked up their biggest win of the season, a straight-set victory over 15th-ranked Washington State (25-21, 25-22, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon in Pullman, Washington.

The Wildcats were led by their two outside hitters -- Paige Whipple and Sofia Maldonado Diaz -- who both posted big kill totals on efficient hitting percentages, and by libero Kamaile Hiapo, who had a season-high 21 digs, her third straight 20-dig match to end the regular season.

In what could have been her final match in an Arizona uniform, Whipple was terrific, finishing with 12 kills on 26 swings (.308) and six digs. Whipple currently sits just outside the Arizona top-10 in career kills and has had one of the best careers by an outside hitter in school history. Arizona's postseason fate is still to be determined, as is her future -- all fall and winter sport athletes were granted an additional year of eligibility that Whipple will make her decision to use at a later date.

Maldonado Diaz made her final Pac-12 Freshman of the Year push with another terrific outing for the Wildcats. The Guadalajara, Mexico native led the Wildcats with 13 kills on .333 hitting. She leads all Pac-12 freshmen in kills per set (3.63) and aces per set (0.37) and is top five overall in both categories.

Hiapo continued her strong finish to the season, finishing with a season-most 21 digs in just the three sets. In her last four matches of the regular season, Hiapo had 18, 20, 20 and 21 digs, respectively.

Now, the Wildcats await the NCAA Tournament selection, which takes place on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPNU. The Wildcats secured a sixth-place finish in the Pac-12 with Saturday's win, finishing in the top half of the conference despite a 10th-place preseason prediction by the Pac-12 coaches. UA went 10-11 this season despite having one of the youngest teams in the country, starting three freshmen all season long.
