TOKYO, Japan — Arizona Diving standout performer
Delaney Schnell took home a silver medal in the Women's Synchronized 10m Platform event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday.
Schnell, alongside her partner Jessica Parratto, tallied a final score of 310.80 to secure the United State's first-ever medal in the event that has been contested since the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
The American diving duo found themselves sitting in 7th place following the first round of dives but continued to mount pressure with consistently strong scores. Schnell and Parratto steadily climbed the leaderboard following each dive and cemented their silver medal position with a spectacular final dive, scoring a 78.72 on their back 2.5 somersaults with 1.5 twists.
Schnell, a Tucson native who has excelled while competing for Arizona Diving, was recently named the Pac-12 Diver of the Year after securing individual conference championships in both the Platform and 1-Meter diving events.
One event remains for Schnell in Tokyo as she looks to add to her medal count in the 10m Platform event next week. The preliminary rounds of the event will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 3 from 11:00 p.m. – 1:30 a.m. MST.
