TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 25 Arizona improved to 33-18 (8-14 Pac-12) after taking the first game of the series from Stanford (34-19, 9-13 Pac-12). The Wildcats scored 10 runs on eight hits, with 10 RBI.
Three Wildcats –
Sophia Carroll,
Sharlize Palacios, and
Allie Skaggs – went yard in the 10-6 win over the Cardinal. Carroll led the team with a career high four RBI and went 2-for-2 with a home run and a double.
Palacios gave Arizona the early lead with a two-run home run in the first inning, bringing her to 17 homers this season. In the second, Stanford scored on an RBI single that Carroll answered with her fourth home run of the season to extend Arizona's lead to 4-1.
Arizona's offense opened up the game in the third, scoring four runs.
Bailey Thompson had an RBI single, Carroll hit a two-RBI double, and
Jasmine Perezchica had an RBI groundout.
Stanford cut into Arizona's seven-run lead with two runs in the fifth. Skaggs hit a two-run homer – her 22nd of the season – to give the Wildcats a 10-3 lead.
The Cardinal scored three runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice and a two-RBI single but couldn't catch up to the Cats.
Madi Elish (8-3) picked up the win after pitching 3.0 innings in relief for
Hanah Bowen. Elish struck out one batter.
