SEATTLE, Wash. – No. 18 Arizona dropped the first two games of the series to No. 9 Washington to fall to 20-11 (3-5 Pac-12) on Saturday. The Wildcats lost the first game – originally scheduled for Friday but was postponed due to rain – 3-1 against Washington. The Huskies won the second game 4-3 on a walk-off home run.
Allie Skaggs totaled six walks across both games – two in the first and four in the second game to tie her career high. In the second game,
Devyn Netz and
Olivia DiNardo each had two hits and one RBI.
Game 1 | Washington 3, Arizona 1
Arizona lost the first game, 3-1, to Washington. The Wildcats only had one hit in the game and scored on a wild pitch.
It was a pitcher's duel through the first four and a half innings. Both teams only allowed one baserunner each through the first three innings before the game was delayed due to rain on Friday night. When the game resumed on Saturday, both teams had bases loaded opportunities, but couldn't push a run across.
Washington broke up the pitcher's duel with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back RBI doubles.
Allie Skaggs led off the top of the sixth with Arizona's first hit of the game – a single up the middle. With Skaggs on third,
Dakota Kennedy drew a two-out walk and Skaggs scored on a wild pitch on the play to bring the game within one.
The Huskies answered with another RBI double to extend their lead to 3-1 in the sixth. The Cats couldn't respond in the top of the seventh.
Devyn Netz (9-8) pitched the first 5.0 innings, striking out six batters but allowing three runs to pick up the loss.
Sydney Somerndike entered in relief in the sixth, striking out one of the three batters she faced.
Game 2 | Washington 4, Arizona 3
The Wildcats fell in the second game, 3-4, on a walk-off home run by the Huskies. Skaggs drew a career-high tying four walks while Netz and DiNardo each had two hits.
Arizona opened the game with one run on an RBI single from Netz in the first. Washington answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning.
In the second, the Huskies hit a two-run home run for the 3-1 lead.
Freshmen
Olivia DiNardo and
Dakota Kennedy tied it up at 3-3 in the third. DiNardo brought one run in on an RBI single and Kennedy had an RBI double to plate Arizona's third run.
In another pitcher's duel, Washington hit a walk-off solo home run in the seventh to win the game.
Ali Blanchard picked up the loss to fall to 5-1 on the season. She relieved
Aissa Silva in the second inning, striking out two batters but gave up the winning home run in 4.1 innings pitched.
