Wildcat Wednesday - Bear Down Arizona Baseball
05/25/2023 | Wildcat Wednesday
The Wildcats have opened the Pac-12 Tournament with a pair of thrilling victories that include a nine-run win over Arizona State and a walk-off win over No. 2 seed Oregon State. Arizona Baseball has now won six of its last seven games and is averaging an impressive 10.7 runs per game during that span. With wins over the Sun Devils and Beavers in consecutive days, Coach Hale and the Wildcats are into the semifinals of the conference tournament and will return to the diamond on Friday at Scottsdale Stadium. You can get more information by visiting the Pac-12's Baseball Tournament hub.
The program began its week with five Wildcats receiving honors from the league, which was led by Nik McClaughry becoming the second player in program history to be named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. Nik was also voted to the All-Defensive and All-Conference teams. He was joined on the All-Conference Team by four of his teammates; Mac Bingham, Chase Davis and Kiko Romero with Tony Bullard being named All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention as well.
Arizona Baseball is playing its best in the postseason and picking up wins in exciting fashion. Congratulations on all the success, and we will see you in Scottsdale on Friday. TRACK & FIELD POSTSEASON
Arizona Track & Field has a contingency of nearly 30 student-athletes competing at the NCAA Regionals this week in Sacramento as the program's quest for more championships continues. Both the men's and women's teams are coming off terrific performances at the Pac-12 Championships, and we know they will achieve more greatness in California this week. The program will compete through Saturday as they look to qualify for the NCAA Championships in June on the campus of the University of Texas.
We've seen plenty of new chapters added to the program's legacy this year, and we know there are more titles to be won. We want to wish all our student-athletes and coaches the best of luck this week. We continue to be honored to have tremendous young men and women proudly donning the Block A as they compete for championships. You can follow the action along and get updates by visiting ArizonaWildcats.com or @ArizonaTrack on social media.
NCAA TENNIS SINGLES COMPETITION
After advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament as a team for the second time in program history, Arizona Men's Tennis achieved more postseason excellence on the singles side as Colton Smith and Jonas Ziverts competed in the NCAA Singles Championships. Jonas was able to advance to the round of 32 in Florida before dropping his final match.
It was a proud moment to see both these Wildcats compete on the biggest of stages again, and it was a privilege to be a part of an outstanding five-year career of Jonas. He was the 2023 Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year and played an integral part in the meteoric rise of our program. A Wildcat through and through, I'd like to congratulate Jonas on an incredible career. He defined what it means to live the Wildcat Way as an academic, athletic and life champion.
ANOTHER SEASON OF EXCELLENCE
Arizona Women's Golf's season came to an end on Monday at the NCAA Championships as one of the top 10 teams in the nation after four days of stroke play. Coach Ianello and her team competed on the biggest of stages during their postseason run and continued the program's standard of excellence. Freshman Nena Wongthanavimok finished in the top 10 of the individual leaderboards and joined the prestigious company of Haley Moore, Erica Blasberg and Lorena Ochoa as Arizona freshmen to finish in the top 10 at nationals.
With a team of underclassmen and senior Gile Bite Starkute announcing her return for a fifth season, the future of Arizona Women's Golf remains incredibly bright. Hats off to our student-athletes, coaches and staff on another terrific season. You are proud representatives of our athletics department and the University of Arizona. Bear Down and Go Cats!
