Jacob Cowing, Jayden de Laura on Maxwell Award Watch List

TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona football wide receiver Jacob Cowing and quarterback Jayden de Laura named to Maxwell Award Preseason Watch List, as announced by the Maxwell Football Club today.
 
The Maxwell Award is presented annually to the College Player of the year since 1937. It marks the first Maxwell Award watch list selection since joining the Wildcats for both de Laura and Cowing. The award is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell who was a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.
 
Cowing was selected to the Maxwell Award watch list after an 85-catch, 1,034-yard performance in 2022, marking the third-most catches and seventh-most yards in a single season in Arizona football history.
 
The senior from Maricopa finished last season first in the Pac-12 in receptions and tied for second in the conference with seven touchdown receptions. Cowing has caught a pass in 44 straight games which is the second-longest streak in the nation.
 
de Laura finished last season as a member of the Davey O'Brien QB Class of 2022. He was selected to The Manning Award Watch List in October and was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week after a season-opening win at San Diego State in 2022.
 
The junior from Honolulu threw for 3,685 yards which marks the third-most in a single season in program history. De Laura threw 25 touchdowns which is the sixth-most in program history.
 
de Laura finished third in the Pac-12 in passing yards per game (307.1) and tied for third in touchdown passes. He led the sixth-best passing attack and the number one explosive play offense in the country last season.
 
The Arizona Wildcats opens the 2023 football season at home against Northern Arizona on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. on Pac-12 Network.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced November 13, 2023, while the three finalists for the Maxwell Award will be unveiled November 28, 2023. The winners of the 87th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 7, 2023. The formal presentations of the Maxwell Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards in March 2024.
