Pueyo Leads Cats Past Cougars, 64-45

TUCSON - Helena Pueyo had 18 points, five steals, four rebounds and two assists to lead Arizona to a 64-45 win over Washington State on Friday night. Pueyo was one of three Wildcats to score in double figures.

Skylar Jones nearly had a double-double, tallying 12 points and eight rebounds to go alongside two assists and a block. Jones and Pueyo were joined in double digits by Isis Beh, who scored a season-high 11 points. Beh pulled in four rebounds and made her first three-pointer as a Wildcat.

Washington State's (15-11, 4-9 Pac-12) Bella Muraketete got the first bucket of the game, but after that initial score Arizona (13-12, 5-8 Pac-12) went on a 12-0 run fueled by four points apiece from Jones and Breya Cunningham. The Wildcats allowed just 10 points by the Cougars in the first quarter and shot 57.1% (8-of-14) from the field.

The Cats continued their strong defensive effort in the second quarter, limiting Washington State to seven points in the frame, and dropped in 23 in the third quarter on 60.0% shooting to take a 22-point lead into the fourth period.

All seven Wildcats who saw playing time scored in the game, and five of those players had at least eight points. Six members of the team had three or more rebounds.

Arizona forced 17 Washington State turnovers, the second-most for the Cougars in a game this season. The Cougars' 17 points in the first half marked the first time Arizona has held an opponent under 10 points in the first half since limiting Seattle to 19 points on Dec. 31, 2023.

Pueyo moved five steals closer to a spot in the Pac-12 record book for career steals. The senior has tallied 278 takeaways during her career and needs 280 to tie for 10th in league history.

Arizona returns to McKale Sunday, Feb. 18 at 12:00 p.m. to take on Washington on Pac-12 Arizona.
