Arizona Splits Doubleheader with Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – No. 21 Arizona split the doubleheader with Utah on Friday. The Wildcats lost the first game, 3-1, and won the second game, 10-8, in eight innings.
 
Carlie Scupin hit two home runs during the day for Arizona and Regan Shockey went 4-for-5 in the second game.

Utah won the first game of the doubleheader, 3-1, on Friday morning.
 
After three-and-a-half scoreless innings, Utah scored two in the bottom of the fourth for the lead. An RBI single and an RBI groundout brought in the pair of runs for the Utes.
 
In the top of the fifth, Carlie Scupin hit a solo home run – her eighth homer of the season to put the Cats on the board. Utah answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to two runs.
 
Miranda Stoddard picked up the loss to fall 2-7 on the season after allowing Utah's three runs in 4.1 innings. Aissa Silva entered in the fourth and held Utah scoreless on two hits.
 
Game 2 | Arizona 10, Utah 8 (8 inn.)
Arizona won the second game, 10-8, in eight innings to even the series. The Wildcats scored 10 runs on 14 hits with 10 RBI, led by Scupin with four RBI and Shockey with a career high four hits.
 
The Utes plated one run in the first inning on an RBI single and hit a solo home run in the third to take a 2-0 lead.
 
Arizona scored three in the top of the fourth to take the lead over the Utes. Tayler Biehl drove in Blaise Biringer with a single to right center for the first run. Dakota Kennedy had an RBI fielder's choice and Shockey drove in the third run of the inning with an RBI single.  
 
Utah regained the lead on a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth. The Utes added two more on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single in the fourth to make it 6-3.
 
Scupin hit a three-run homer – her second home run of the day and ninth of the season – to tie the game at 6-6 in the sixth.
 
Emily Schepp gave Arizona the lead in the seventh with a sac-fly and Kaiah Altmeyer hit her first career triple to score one more run for Arizona for an 8-6 lead.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Utah tied it at 8-8 with a two-run double to force extra innings.
 
The Wildcats scored two in the eighth. Scupin doubled to score Shockey from first base for a one-run lead. Biringer added one more for Arizona with an RBI single through the left side.
 
In the circle, Stoddard earned her third win of the season to improve to 3-7 and Silva picked up her first save of the season. Silva started the game and allowed three runs on three hits in the first three innings. Ali Blanchard entered in relief for Silva in the fourth but gave up two runs before Stoddard entered. Stoddard pitched 3.2 innings and allowed Utah to score three runs on six hits. Silva reentered in the eighth with the tying run at-bat and retired the three Utes she faced to earn the save.

The Wildcats will close out the series at Utah with a rubber match on Sunday, April 7 at 11 a.m. MST in Salt Lake City.
