TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Gymnastics head coach John Court has announced that the program will hire Shelby Martinez (Edwards) as the third assistant coach.
 
"I am pleased to welcome Shelby and her family back to Tucson," head coach John Court said. "She brings experience as an elite competitor, successful collegiate athlete, and professional coach. Her high energy and positive attitude are both contagious and our athletes will benefit in all areas from her presence."
 
Martinez comes to Arizona after coaching at Carter's Gymnastics Academy in Mesa, Arizona for eight years. At Carter's Gymnastics, Martinez was a coach, choreographer, and compulsory team director. She has worked with gymnasts from Levels 2-10 and has instructed coaching clinics. In addition, she choreographed over 75 beam and floor routines for Levels 6-10 and Xcel gymnasts at Carter's Gymnastics.  
 
As an Arizona alumna, Martinez held career high scores of 9.95 on vault, 9.90 on the balance beam, and 9.85 on the uneven bars and floor. She earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors twice during her first season as a GymCat in 2013 and earned second team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 Co-Vault Champion honors in 2014. Martinez's career-best 9.95 on vault remains tied for eighth in program history and secured her a share of the 2014 Pac-12 Vault Championship.
