Arizona Sweeps Day One of Borderland Invitational

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Arizona Wildcats improved to 8-0 on the season after they took down the Abilene Christian Wildcats in three sets and swept Texas Southern in the second match of the day on Friday at the Borderland Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. 
 
Game 1 | Arizona 3, Abilene Christian 0
Arizona won the first match of the day in three sets (25-13, 25-23, 25-9) against Abilene Christian. Arizona's offense was led by Jordan Wilson with 13 kills and a .357 hitting percentage. Carlie Cisneros had six kills and 10 digs in the match. Kiari Robey recorded seven blocks to pace the Arizona defense.
 
Arizona won the first set, 25-13. Jaelyn Hodge led the team with four kills and Wilson followed with three kills. Arizona recorded six blocks in the set, led by Robey and Journey Tucker with three blocks each, to hold Abilene Christian to a -0.114 hitting percentage. Arizona jumped out to an early 11-point lead at 14-3 and held the lead the entire set. 
 
Arizona took a 2-0 lead in the match after winning the second set 25-23. The Cats fell behind and had to make a comeback to win the set. Wilson recorded five kills to lead the attack and Tucker had four kills. Arizona out-blocked ACU 3.0-1.0 and Robey was involved in all three blocks.
 
Arizona won the third set, 25-9, to sweep Abilene Christian. Arizona held the lead the entire set and limited ACU to four kills and a -0.160 hitting percentage. Wilson led the offense with five kills and Sydnie Vanek had three kills. Giorgia Mandotti helped Arizona win the set with two service aces.
 
Game 2 | Arizona 3, Texas Southern 0
Arizona won its second match of the day, 3-0, over Texas Southern. The Wildcats hit .402, served 10 aces, and totaled 6.0 blocks in the match. Wilson led the team again with 13 kills and Cisneros served a career-high four aces. Defensively, Alayna Johnson and Robey both had three blocks to lead the team.
 
The Wildcats won the first set, 25-16. Cisneros and Robey led the offense with four kills each while Wilson and Johnson each had three kills. Arizona hit .367 in the first set and served three aces to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
Arizona took the second set, 25-16, over Texas Southern. The Cats had five blocks to hold the Tigers to a -0.071 hitting percentage in the set. Wilson tallied four kills while Cisneros and Ana Heath had three kills each. Arizona jumped out to an early lead and used multiple scoring runs to hold the lead throughout the set.
 
The Cats won the match with a 25-7 victory in the third set. Arizona went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-1 lead in the set and the team hit .630 and served five aces to win the set. Wilson led the offense with six kills and Adrianna Bridges followed with four kills. Freshman An den Hamer recorded her first career kill to win the match for the Wildcats.
 
Arizona will face New Mexico State in the final match of the Borderland Invitational on Saturday, September 14 at 1 p.m. MST.
