FULLERTON, Calif. – The No. 10 Wildcats swept the second day of the Judi Garman Classic to improve to 20-2 on the season. Arizona won the first game, 7-1, over Notre Dame and won 9-8 in an extra-inning thriller over No. 4 UCLA.
Game 1 | #10 Arizona 7, Notre Dame 1
The Cats won the opening game, 7-1, over Notre Dame. Arizona tallied 14 hits and
Regan Shockey led the team with three hits.
Sydney Stewart went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs to help the Cats beat the Fighting Irish.
Arizona scored one run in the first inning on an RBI single from
Devyn Netz. The Cats added four more in the second to take a 5-0 lead. Altmeyer hit a sacrifice fly and
Tayler Biehl scored on a wild pitch to plate the first two runs. Stewart had a two-run single to round out the inning.
In the fourth,
Paige Dimler hit a sacrifice fly to send
Regan Shockey home for a 6-0 lead. Notre Dame hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth but Stewart answered with a solo homer – her eighth of the season – to score the seventh run for Arizona.
Miranda Stoddard earned the win to improve to 5-0 after pitching 4.0 innings and striking out four batters while not allowing a run.
Aissa Silva entered in the fifth and kept Notre Dame scoreless in the fifth.
Saya Swain pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out five batters.
Game 2 | #10 Arizona 9, #4 UCLA 8 (10 inn.)
Arizona won the second game in an electric 10 inning game to close out the day. The Wildcats walked off the Bruins, 9-8, on a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning.
The Cats out-hit the Bruins, 13 hits to eight hits, to complete the upset. Altmeyer and Shockey both went 3-for-4 and four Wildcats had two RBI each.
Arizona struck first with two runs in the first inning. Netz hit an RBI double to bring in the first run and Dimler singled to drive in the second run.
UCLA tied the game in the fourth with a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly. In the top of the seventh, UCLA hit a three-run home run to take a 5-2 lead.
The Cats answered back with three in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Stewart hit a two-run single and Netz hit a sac fly for Arizona.
Both teams were scoreless in the eighth, but UCLA scored one in the top of the ninth on a fielding error. Altmeyer tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single.
In the top of the 10th, the Bruins hit a two-run home run to take an 8-6 lead.
The Wildcats walked off the Bruins in the bottom of the 10th after scoring three runs to win 9-8.
Emily Schepp hit a two-run pinch-hit home run to tie the game at 8-8. With
Emma Kavanagh on third, Altmeyer hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Kavanagh to win the game.
Netz picked up the 10-inning win to improve to 8-1 this season. She struck out seven batters en route to the victory in the circle.
