Historic $5 Million Commitment Creates R. Ken Coit Director of Athletics Position and R. Ken Coit Gate at Arizona Stadium

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has received a historic $5 million commitment from alumnus R. Ken Coit ('67) to establish the R. Ken Coit Director of Athletics position. This marks the first named director of athletics position in university history, only the second named position overall within the athletic department, and the largest naming gift to Arizona Athletics since 2018.

In recognition of Coit's enduring generosity, Gate 3 at Arizona Stadium will be named the R. Ken Coit Gate, welcoming thousands of fans each season. A permanent plaque will honor his belief in visionary leadership, competitive excellence, and lifelong commitment to the Wildcat community.

"Arizona needs to compete at the highest levels, and I believe we have the right leadership in place that can elevate Arizona Athletics," said Coit. "To do that, it will require significant resources, and I am proud to do whatever I can to help ensure our student-athletes, coaches, and staff have the support they need to succeed. Naming the Director of Athletics position and having Gate 3 at Arizona Stadium named in recognition of this commitment is deeply meaningful, and my hope is that it strengthens the foundation of competitive excellence and inspires future generations of Wildcats."

The establishment of the named leadership position reflects Coit's belief in the leadership and direction of Arizona Athletics. His commitment affirms the vital role of the Director of Athletics position in navigating today's rapidly evolving intercollegiate landscape and provides lasting resources to drive strategic initiatives, champion department-wide excellence, and position Arizona Athletics for long-term success. The title will be held by all future leaders in the role, creating a legacy of enduring support.

"I am deeply honored and humbled to serve as the inaugural R. Ken Coit Director of Athletics," said Desiree Reed-Francois. "The generosity of Ken and his family reflects a bold belief in what Arizona Athletics represents – competitive excellence, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to all of our student-athletes. This gift will help us continue to invest in the future while honoring the values that make the Tucson community and the University of Arizona so special. From the gate that welcomes our fans into Arizona Stadium to the leadership position that guides our department, Ken's vision will forever be part of our foundation and future."

Coit is also the namesake of the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy, following one of the largest academic gifts in university history in 2021. Over the past 50 years, he has donated more than $70 million to benefit students, faculty, research and athletics, cementing his legacy as one of the university's most visionary supporters.

Coit will be formally recognized on October 4 during Arizona Football's home game against Oklahoma State in celebration, with a ceremony celebrating his unwavering commitment and extraordinary generosity.
