SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.- Arizona women's tennis opened the fall with a historic showing at the Battle in the Bay Classic, as sophomores
Haylee Conway and
Zoya Chulak reached the doubles final in their first fall tournament.
The Wildcat duo rolled through the draw with three straight wins, beginning Thursday with an 8-5 victory over Fantousis/Fayos Capilla (San Jose State). Friday morning, they topped Sacramento State's Riva/Baudouin 8-3 before clinching their place in the championship with an 8-6 win Saturday morning against Caballero Chica/Ramos Sierra (TCU) – a pair coming off an upset of No. 15 USC.
In Sunday's final, Conway and Chulak went toe-to-toe with No. 21 Anastasiia Grechkina/Alexia Harmon of Pepperdine, ultimately falling in a tiebreak, 8-7(4).
The result marked Arizona's first appearance in a Battle in the Bay final since 2016, when Lauren Marker and Paris Corley advanced to both the singles and doubles championships. For Conway and Chulak, it was a statement debut, making their first final in a fall event.
Chulak also shined in singles, cruising past UC San Diego's Hana Gamracy 6-0, 6-4 in her opening match. She advanced to the round of 16 before falling to eventual champion Grechkina, 6-4, 6-2. Conway faced a tough draw in her opener, falling to No. 97 Harmon 6-1, 6-0.
The Arizona Wildcats will compete in the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, North Carolina. The team will be represented by transfer Maria Garcia, along with Josie Usereau, Martyna Ostrzygalo, and Tanvi Narendran. More information about the tournament will be announced later this week.
