TUCSON, Ariz. – The Big 12 Conference announced its weekly award winners for the week ending Feb. 1 and Arizona freshman guard
Brayden Burries was named player and newcomer of the week.
Â
It is the first time Burries has won either award from the conference, with his only prior honor being named to the "Starting Five" on Dec. 15.
Koa Peat is the only other Wildcat to receive the conference's top weekly honor, doing so back on Nov. 10 after scoring 30 points in the season opener against Florida.Â
Â
In two games last week, Burries averaged 23.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting 54.5% from the floor and 50% from the 3-point line to help Arizona to wins at No. 13 BYU and at Arizona State.
Â
Burries is averaging 17.2 points per game in Big 12 play and has a 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio while leading the team in 3-pointers made.
Â
Burries and the Wildcats are off to the best start in program history at 22-0 and were voted the unanimous No. 1 team in this week's Associated Press Top 25 for the third consecutive week.
Â
Arizona will host Oklahoma State on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. MST on ESPN.
