TUCSON, Ariz. - For the first time this spring and the fourth time in the past two seasons, Arizona men's tennis player Jay Friend has garnered Big 12 Player of the Week honors, the conference announced Tuesday.
Friend is coming off a perfect weekend in singles play, in which he defeated #88 Edward Winter (Pepperdine) and Oliver Tarvet (San Diego), competing on court one in both matches.
Friend commenced the weekend by helping lead Arizona to a road victory over #25 Pepperdine. The senior from Japan won his doubles match playing alongside Alejandro Arcila, as the duo defeated #53 Gustavo Almeida and David Fix to help Arizona secure the doubles point. Friend then defeated Winter 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), as the Wildcats won 4-2.
On Sunday, Arizona traveled to face #10 San Diego, and Friend won his singles match against Tarvet in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Friend is undefeated this spring, as he aims to help continue to lead the 17th ranked Wildcats.
Arizona will have a break before returning to the court on Saturday, February 21 to face UC San Diego.
