KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Arizona wasted no time showing why it entered the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament as the league's top seed, racing out to a massive early lead and cruising past UCF 81–59 in Thursday's quarterfinal at T-Mobile Center.
The Wildcats (30–2) dominated from the opening tip, scoring the first seven points and building a 27-point advantage less than 13 minutes into the game. Arizona led 46–30 at halftime and never allowed the Knights to draw closer than 12 the rest of the way.
It is the eighth time in program history that Arizona has won 30 games in a season and the second time under head coach
Tommy Lloyd.
Freshman guard
Brayden Burries continued his postseason surge, scoring 21 points on 7-for-13 shooting — including 3-for-7 from deep — while adding three rebounds and two steals. Burries was relentless attacking UCF turnovers, scoring repeatedly in transition as Arizona generated 18 points off 15 UCF giveaways.
Arizona's balance again proved overwhelming.
Ivan Kharchenkov added 10 points, hitting all four of his shots, while
Koa Peat finished with 12 points and four rebounds.
Motiejus Krivas posted nine points and 10 rebounds, controlling the paint as the Wildcats outscored UCF 38–28 inside.
Forward
Tobe Awaka delivered one of the game's most impactful performances, producing 12 points and 12 rebounds — eight of them on the offensive glass — helping Arizona secure 14 second-chance points. The Wildcats outrebounded UCF 44–36 and grabbed eight more offensive boards, repeatedly extending possessions and wearing down the Knights.
Arizona's defense also set the tone, holding UCF to 36.5% shooting and just 3-for-21 from three-point range. The Wildcats forced long droughts from the Knights, who struggled to find clean looks against Arizona's length and physicality.
The first-half barrage effectively decided the game. Burries scored seven early points, Kharchenkov drilled a transition three, and Awaka threw down a pair of dunks as Arizona erupted on a 15-0 run to take complete control. The Wildcats led 35–8 at the 7:38 mark, their largest lead of the afternoon.
UCF (21–11) was paced by Themus Fulks with 14 points while Jamichael Stillwell and Jordan Burks added 10 points each.
With the win, the Wildcats advance to the Big 12 semifinals where they will take on No. 5 seed Iowa State on Friday at 4:00 p.m. MST.
