TEMPE, Ariz.- No. 34 Arizona opened a four-match road stretch Saturday but fell 4-2 to No. 13 Arizona State at Whiteman Tennis Center.
Arizona started strong in doubles play, claiming two courts to secure the opening point. Zoya Chulak and Ciara Moore rolled to a 6-1 victory over Svetac/Ovrootsky (ASU) on Court 1, while Tanvi Narendran and Martyna Ostrzygalo followed with a 6-4 win against Tverijonaite/Bartanusz (ASU) on Court 3. The match on Court 2 between Josie Usereau and Maria Garcia and Nupbay/Taylor (ASU) went unfinished at 5-5.
Arizona State answered in singles play, winning four completed courts to secure the dual match. No. 19 Emilija Tverijonaite defeated Ostrzygalo 6-1, 6-2 on Court 1, and Sara Svetac topped Josie Usereau 6-4, 6-4 on Court 2. Vivian Ovrootsky added a 6-3, 6-1 win over Moore on Court 3.
Chulak earned Arizona's lone singles point with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 victory over Sarang Lim on Court 6. Aiya Nupbay secured the clinching point for the Sun Devils with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Maria Garcia on Court 5. The match between Tanvi Narendran and Lily Taylor remained unfinished in the third set.
Arizona returns to action this week as conference play continues on the road.
