FORT WORTH, Texas.- No. 43 Arizona opened Big 12 play on the road this weekend, competing in its first conference matches of the season with a pair of competitive contests in Texas, falling 4-3 to No. 54 Baylor on Friday before dropping a 4-1 decision to No. 33 TCU on Sunday.
Against Baylor, the Wildcats battled to the final court in a tightly contested match. Arizona dropped the doubles point after Kubacha/Villegas (BAY) defeated Zoya Chulak and Ciara Moore 6-2, and Dong/Zack (BAY) topped Danielle Tuhten and Martyna Ostrzygalo 6-1.
In singles, Arizona responded with three wins. Josie Usereau earned a ranked victory over No. 110 Zuzanna Kubacha (BAY) 6-3, 6-4, while Moore secured a 6-1, 7-5 win against Kennedy Gibbs (BAY). Tanvi Narendran added a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Luna Ivkovic (BAY). Baylor ultimately clinched with three-set wins on courts one, four and five to secure the 4-3 result.
On Sunday against No. 33 TCU, Arizona opened strong by claiming the doubles point. Chulak and Moore defeated Gomez O'Hayon/Tsai (TCU) 6-3, and Usereau and Maria Garcia followed with a 6-1 win over Caballero Chica/Jackson (TCU).
TCU responded in singles, taking four completed courts to earn the 4-1 victory. Moore, Garcia, Narendran and Chulak competed in straight-set matches, while Ostrzygalo and Usereau were in third sets when the match was clinched.
Arizona returns home Friday to host No. 42 University of Central Florida at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
