TUCSON, Ariz.- No. 35 Arizona continues Big 12 play this weekend with two home matches at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center, hosting Iowa State on Friday before welcoming No. 34 Kansas on Sunday.
Arizona enters the weekend following a strong 3-0 road trip, earning wins over Cincinnati, Xavier, and West Virginia. The Wildcats opened with a 4-0 sweep of Cincinnati, securing the doubles point behind wins from Zoya Chulak and Ciara Moore over Watanabe/Gruszczynska (UC) and Maria Garcia and Josie Usereau over Guenther/Kurepa (UC). In singles, Garcia defeated Kurepa (UC) 6-2, 6-1, Tanvi Narendran topped Arsic (UC) 6-1, 6-1, and Martyna Ostrzygalo clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Guenther (UC).
Arizona followed with another 4-0 win over Xavier later that day. The Wildcats again secured the doubles point behind wins from Usereau/Garcia over Rexroat/DeFord (Xavier) and Ostrzygalo/Narendran over Flowers/Smitek (Xavier). In singles, Garcia earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Owen (Xavier), Ostrzygalo defeated Nugent (Xavier) 6-4, 6-1, and Moore clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Flowers (Xavier).
The Wildcats closed the weekend with a 4-1 victory over West Virginia. After dropping the doubles point, Arizona responded in singles with four wins. Ostrzygalo led the way with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Moutama (WVU), Garcia defeated Tognoni (WVU) 6-2, 6-0, and Moore clinched the match with a three-set win over Bousseau (WVU) 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The Wildcats open the weekend on Friday at 12 p.m. MST against Iowa State. The Cyclones feature the No. 83 ranked singles player Maria de la Paz Alberto and do not have any ranked doubles teams. The meeting marks the second matchup in program history between the two teams, with Arizona falling 4-3 in last year's meeting in Ames.
Arizona returns to the court Sunday at 11 a.m. MST to face No. 34 Kansas. The Jayhawks bring the No. 53 ranked singles player Kyoka Kubo, along with the No. 47 ranked doubles pair of Janse van Vuuren/Kubo. Arizona holds a 4-3 edge in the all-time series and enters the match after earning a 4-2 win in the most recent meeting in Lawrence.
The Wildcats are currently ranked No. 35 in the latest ITA team rankings and do not have any ranked singles or doubles players.
