TUCSON, Ariz. — No. 3 Jay Friend delivered a commanding 6-2, 6-3 victory over Ofek Shimanov on Senior Day at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center, propelling No. 9 Arizona to a dominant sweep of Arizona State on Saturday. The win marked the Wildcats' 12th consecutive victory and they improved to a perfect 5-0 in Big 12 play this season.
With the impressive triumph, Arizona also moved to 17-3 overall on the season.
The Wildcats set the tone early by securing the doubles point and taking a 1-0 lead. Friend and Alexander Rozin opened with a 6-3 victory over Roi Genat and Jelani Sarr, before Filip Gustafsson and Glib Sekachov clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Roi Genat and Jelani Sarr.
Arizona carried that momentum into singles play, with Rozin putting the Wildcats on the brink of victory with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win on Court 2 over Mathis Bondaz.
Sekachov followed shortly after on Court 5, turning in an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory against Niels Villard to extend Arizona's lead to 3-0.
Friend, Arizona's lone senior, capped the day in style on Court 1, controlling his match from start to finish in a 6-2, 6-3 win. The performance served as a fitting exclamation point on an exceptional career in one of his final regular season appearances at home, as it was another stellar outing.
The sweep marked Arizona's second over Arizona State this season and extended its winning streak in the rivalry to eight straight matches.
Arizona will look to continue its momentum next Sunday as it travels to face Texas Tech, aiming for a 13th consecutive victory. First serve is slated for 12 p.m. (MST).
