KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Arizona's season came to a close Wednesday night as the Wildcats fell to Arizona State, 54-51, in the first round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Tournament at T-Mobile Center.
Arizona opened strong, jumping out to an early lead before Arizona State held an 18-17 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats continued to battle in the second quarter and trailed by just one at halftime, 29-28.
The two teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter, with Arizona briefly reclaiming the lead before the Sun Devils carried a narrow 42-40 advantage into the final period. The Wildcats stayed within striking distance in the fourth quarter, but Arizona State held on in the closing moments to secure the three-point victory.
Daniah Trammell and Sumayah Sugapong led Arizona with 12 points each, while Noelani Cornfield added 10 points and a team-high four assists. Nora Francois contributed seven rebounds for the Wildcats.
Arizona shot 37.3 percent from the field and finished 10-of-14 from the free throw line while recording 30 rebounds and eight assists in the contest.
The Wildcats conclude the season with a 12-18 overall record.
