ORLANDO, Fla. - The No. 9 Arizona men's tennis team delivered a gritty, comeback victory on Friday afternoon, taking down No. 14 UCF, 4-3, in the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament. With the win, the Wildcats advance to the championship match, where they will face No. 3 TCU on Saturday at 11 a.m. (MST).
Arizona (21-5) secured the early momentum by claiming the doubles point. The duo of Jay Friend and Alexander Rozin struck first with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, before Cole Stelse and Alejandro Arcila clinched the point with a 6-4 victory on court three.
In singles play, the Wildcats found themselves in a tight battle as UCF Knights responded with three wins to take a 3-2 lead. No. 4 Jay Friend put Arizona on the board with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win at the top spot, but UCF answered with victories at No. 2, No. 4, and No. 6 singles.
Facing a deficit, Arizona showed tremendous poise and resiliency down the stretch. Glib Sekachov delivered a crucial comeback at No. 5 singles, bouncing back from a first-set tiebreak loss to win 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 6-2 and even the match at 3-3.
The semifinal ultimately came down to court three, where No. 93 Alexander Rozin battled through a three-set thriller. After edging the first set in a tiebreak, Rozin regrouped following a second-set loss and closed out a 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 6-4 victory to clinch the match for Arizona.
With the win, the Wildcats advance to the Big 12 Championship match, looking to cap off their tournament run with a title against TCU and sweep the Regular Season and Conference Tournament titles.
