TUCSON, Ariz.- Arizona secured two home wins at home over the weekend, defeating Colorado 4-3 on Friday before sweeping defending Big 12 champion Texas Tech 4-0 on Senior Day.
Arizona opened the weekend against Colorado, dropping the doubles point despite a win on court three from Tanvi Narendran and Martyna Ostrzygalo, who defeated Bubalo/Nelson (CU) 6-4. Colorado claimed courts one and two to take an early 1-0 lead.
In singles, Arizona battled back to secure the 4-3 victory with wins on courts three, two, five and one. Ciara Moore started the momentum with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Brotman (CU) on court three, before Josie Usereau gave Arizona its first lead with a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Van Der Werff (CU) on court two. Maria Garcia extended the advantage to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Nelson (CU) on court five. Colorado answered with wins on courts six and four to even the match, but Martyna Ostrzygalo sealed the victory on court one, outlasting El Sayed (CU) 7-5, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (10-8).
Arizona carried that momentum into Sunday's Senior Day matchup against defending Big 12 champion Texas Tech, earning a 4-0 sweep. The Wildcats avenged an earlier 4-3 loss to the Red Raiders in February, delivering a dominant performance in their final home match of the season.
In doubles, Josie Usereau and Maria Garcia earned a 6-2 win over Daskalova/Hlahola (TTU) on court two to give Arizona the early edge. With court one falling shortly after, the point came down to court three, where Tanvi Narendran and Martyna Ostrzygalo clinched it with a 7-6 (7-2) victory against Brownback/Lila (TTU).
In singles, Ciara Moore gave Arizona a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sleptsova (TTU) on court three. Zoya Chulak extended the advantage to 3-0 with a 6-1, 7-5 victory against Brownback (TTU) on court six, before Maria Garcia sealed the sweep on court five, defeating Kadi (TTU) 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Three additional matches went unfinished.
Arizona will look to carry its momentum on the road next weekend, traveling to face No. 30 Utah on Thursday and No. 32 BYU on Saturday.
