TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats took home three Big 12 yearly awards after the conclusion of the Big 12 Championships and NCAA Championships, highlighted by Head Coach
Ben Loorz being named Women's Swimming Coach of the Year.
Dwight Dumais was also named Men's Diving Coach of the Year, while
Luke Hernandez was named Men's Freshman of the Year. These awards come after the Wildcats secured two second-place finishes at the Big 12 Championships.
Loorz has had a lasting impact on the team in just his second year as head coach at Arizona. Under Loorz's direction, the women's team earned another second-place finish at the conference championships and ended the season ranked in the top 25 nationally. Eight women improved or earned a spot on the top-10 Arizona best times list. Nine athletes earned All-Big 12 First Team, and 11 earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors. Additionally, at the Big 12 Championships, the 200 free relay and 200 medley squads earned conference titles. Dumais led the men's diving team to one of the strongest finishes in recent years.
Dumais developed a consistent men's diving squad, placing in the top three at every dual meet this season. At the Big 12 Championships, the men's team placed in the top three in every event, with conference titles earned in the 1-meter and platform events. The men's diving team also had three athletes qualify for NCAAs, which is the first time since 2001.
Hernandez was named Big 12 Men's Freshman of the Year after an outstanding debut season. At the Big 12 Championships, Hernandez earned the title in the 3-meter event with a score of 427.60 and second-place finishes in the 1-meter and platform events. Hernandez then went on to qualify for all three events at the NCAA Championships. During the season, Hernandez earned 13 top three finishes in various events, showing his consistency and versatility for the team. Hernandez won Big 12 Men's Diver of the Week Honors three times this season.
In addition to the Wildcats haul of yearly awards, a multitude of Arizona swimmers and divers earned All-Conference nods. First and Second Team All-Conference recognition were earned based on finals placement at the Big 12 Championships. Athletes who placed in the top four in their individual event received First Team honors, while fifth through eighth were recognized as Second Team All-Big 12.
