TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona men's tennis team opened NCAA Tournament play in dominant fashion on Friday afternoon, sweeping Northern Arizona, 4-0, at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 22-4 on the season and move on to face the Clemson Tigers on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Tucson with a spot in the NCAA Sweet-16 on the line.
Arizona wasted little time taking control of the match, earning the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Filip Gustafsson and Oskar Jansson opened doubles play with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles before Jay Friend and Alexander Rozin matched the score on court one to clinch the point for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats carried that momentum into singles competition, where they claimed three straight-set victories to seal the match.
Alejandro Arcila was first off the court, delivering a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles to extend Arizona's lead to 2-0. Jay Friend followed with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 victory on court one, putting the Wildcats one point away from advancing.
Filip Gustafsson clinched the match for Arizona at No. 3 singles, defeating Jakub Volesky 6-2, 6-4 to send the Wildcats into the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Arizona also held commanding leads in the unfinished matches, including Alexander Rozin leading 6-1, 5-2 at No. 2 singles and Matthias Uwe Kask ahead 6-3, 5-1 on court six when play was halted.
The Wildcats will return to LaNelle Robson Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon as they host Clemson in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
