In a match that will go down in Arizona men's tennis history, the Wildcats gutted out a clutch 4-3 victory over No. 9 seed Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon in Tucson, advancing to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history.
The Wildcats (24-4) earned every bit of the victory, as the match came down to the final court.
Oklahoma (20-7) came out swinging, securing the doubles point with wins on Courts No. 1 and No. 2 before the match on Court No. 3 -Â where Alejandro Arcila and Cole Stese held a 5-3 lead -Â was left unfinished. Arizona entered singles play trailing 1-0 and needing a response.
The Sooners struck first in singles as well, earning a straight-set win on Court No. 4 to extend the lead to 2-0.
Arizona answered behind Glib Sekachov, who delivered Arizona's first point of the afternoon with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alejandro Melero on Court No. 5.
Oklahoma regained momentum with a win on Court No. 2 to move in front 3-1, but Alexander Rozin responded immediately on Court No. 3, battling through a pair of tiebreak sets to defeat Orel Kimhi, 7-6(4), 7-6(4), and keep Arizona alive.
Alejandro Arcila pulled the Wildcats even moments later with a gritty three-set victory over Asahi Harazaki on Court No. 6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, tying the match at 3-3 and leaving everything to Court No. 1.
In the match of the day, Jay Friend battled past ranked Luis Alvarez in a thrilling three-set showdown on Court No. 1, 7-6(6), 5-7, 6-0, clinching the victory and sending Arizona to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history.
Saturday's result marks another milestone season for the Wildcats, who overcame an early deficit and delivered under pressure with the match on the line.
Arizona will travel to Athens, Georgia, where they will face No. 1 overall seed Wake Forest on Thursday.
