Wildcats Defeat Clemson 4-2, Punch Ticket to Sweet 16

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona men's tennis team advanced to the Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Clemson, 4-2, at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 23-4 on the season and will host either No. 9 Oklahoma or USC next Saturday in Tucson with a spot in the NCAA Elite Eight on the line.

Arizona grabbed control early by securing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Jay Friend and Alexander Rozin opened doubles play with a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles before Alejandro Arcila and Cole Stelse matched the score on court three to give the Wildcats the early 1-0 advantage.

The Wildcats carried that momentum into singles, where Jay Friend set the tone with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Viktor Markov at No. 1 singles to put Arizona up 2-0. Clemson responded with a win on court three, but Matthias Uwe Kask pushed the Wildcats back in front with a 7-6(5), 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.

Zoran Ludoski then delivered the clinching point for Arizona at No. 4 singles, defeating Henrik Bladelius, 7-5, 7-5, to seal the match and send the Wildcats back to the Sweet 16. Arizona also led in the unfinished match on court five, where Alejandro Arcila was tied with Marko Mesarovic, 7-5, 4-6, when play was halted.

The Wildcats will now turn their attention to Saturday when they will continue their postseason run in Tucson.
