FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Following historic finishes at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, Arizona Track & Field will send 29 student-athletes to compete at the NCAA West First Round Regional hosted by Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., May 28-31. The Wildcats will look to qualify athletes for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Arizona enters the regional meet coming off one of the strongest conference championship performances in program history as the men finished runner-up at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships with 101 points while the women placed third overall. The combined finish marked the program's highest conference championship finish since 2012.
The Wildcats are led by Big 12 High Point Performer of the Meet Mason Lawyer, who enters the NCAA West First Round ranked among the nation's best in both the 100m and 200m after breaking the school and Big 12 record in the 200m at the conference championships with a time of 20.02. Lawyer will compete in the 100m, 200m, and as part of Arizona's 4x100m relay alongside James Onanubosi, John Paredes, and Parker Duskin. The relay squad enters the meet after breaking the school record at the Big 12 Championships.
Paredes and Duskin will also compete individually in the 110m hurdles after both earned All-Big 12 honors earlier this postseason while Yan Vasquez will represent Arizona in the 400m hurdles. Vincent Gwachi and Lawi Ngetich are scheduled to compete in the 1500m.
In the field events, Big 12 javelin champion Jett Kinder will compete in the men's javelin after recording a personal best throw of 70.02m at the conference championships. Antone Smith will also compete in the triple jump on Friday. Sam Hala'Ufia and Tyler Michelini will represent Arizona in the shot put while Sam and Moses Hala'Ufia are also set to compete in the discus.
The women begin competition Thursday led by Hollan Powers and Taylen Wise in the 100m hurdles after both runners moved into Arizona's all-time top five earlier this season. Brooke Lyons, McKenna Watson, and Brooke Nordman will compete in the sprint events while Syndei Vanek enters the long jump competition. The trio of Emma Gates, Paris Mikinski and Kya Crook are competing int he high jump. Olivia Dillon is scheduled to compete in the pole vault while Erin Tack and Emily Psarras will represent Arizona in the javelin.
In the throws, Tapenisa Havea and Haedyn Bambolo will compete in the shot put while Arizona's women's sprint group looks to continue its strong postseason performances after the Wildcats broke the school record in the 4x100m relay at the Big 12 Championships.
