TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Track & Field Head Coach Andrew Dubs has announced the promotion of Gabriel Mvumvure to Associate Head Coach following a record-breaking first season leading the Wildcats' sprint program. In his first year in Tucson, Mvumvure guided one of the nation's fastest sprint groups, helping rewrite the Arizona record book while producing national-level performances on both the men's and women's sides.
Under Mvumvure's direction, Arizona set school records across its sprint program during the 2026 outdoor season. On the women's side, the Wildcats broke the school record in the 200 meters and twice lowered the program record in the 4x100-meter relay. The men's squad followed by setting new school records in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x100-meter relay.
His athletes earned three All-America honors during the 2026 campaign, including one during the indoor season and two during the outdoor championships. Mvumvure also coached 10 NCAA Championship qualifiers across seven different events in his first year with the Wildcats.
"Coach Gabu has had a tremendous and immediate impact on not just our sprints group but the entire program. He is able to relate and connect across all event groups with his leadership and outgoing personality," said Dubs. "I couldn't be happier for him to take this next step as our Associate Head Coach and look forward to more championship and record breaking performances for years to come.""
Before joining Arizona in June of 2025, Mvumvure spent three seasons as the men's and women's sprints and hurdles coach at Washington State. During his tenure, his athletes produced 247 personal bests, 81 performances that ranked among the program's all-time top 10, 26 school records, 11 freshman records, seven All-Americans, an NCAA Outdoor runner-up and multiple NCAA Outdoor Championship qualifiers.
Prior to Washington State, Mvumvure spent three seasons at Brown University, where his athletes combined for 109 personal bests, 33 all-time top-10 performances, five school records and two NCAA Regional qualifiers.
A former world-class sprinter, Mvumvure was a three-time World Championships semifinalist before beginning his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at LSU, where he was also an accomplished student-athlete. He helped LSU capture the 2008 NCAA Championship and SEC Championship in the 4x100-meter relay while earning three All-America honors and two All-SEC selections. Mvumvure was also a three-time SEC Track Athlete of the Week and graduated from LSU in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in international relations/political science.
