TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona men's tennis head coach Clancy Shields, who last season led the Wildcats to their first ever NCAA Elite Eight appearance, has signed a two-year contract extension through 2030-31, R. Ken Coit Director of Athletics Desireé Reed-Francois announced Friday.

Shields, entering his 11th season in Tucson, has guided Arizona to back-to-back Big 12 championships and four consecutive NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, including last year's Elite Eight run.

"Clancy has built Arizona men's tennis into one of the top programs in the country," Reed-Francois said. "His teams play with grit, poise and passion which reflects his coaching style. We look forward to Clancy leading our program for many more seasons to come."

This past season was arguably the best in program history as the Wildcats went 24-5, closing the regular season with 15 consecutive victories, including four wins over nationally ranked opponents. Arizona defeated Northern Arizona, Clemson and Oklahoma in the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 1 Wake Forest in the quarterfinals. The Wildcats finished the season ranked No. 7 in the nation, the highest final team ranking in program history. Senior Jay Friend finished the year ranked No. 3 nationally in singles, tying the highest final singles ranking by a player in school history.

The Wildcats also excelled in the classroom, posting a 3.624 team GPA during the 2026 spring semester, the highest among all Arizona men's programs.

"It's hard to believe a decade has already gone by," Shields said. "I'm thankful to Desireé Reed-Francois and the University of Arizona for their continued trust and belief in me to lead this program. I'm just as excited about what's ahead as I was on day one.

"My family and I love Tucson, and we're grateful to call it home. There isn't another place I'd rather coach. I love coming to work every day because of our players. The relationships we've built and the culture we've created are what make this job so special. It's a great honor to wear the Block A, and I'm excited for the next chapter as we continue building a program that our alumni, fans, and university can be proud of."

Shields owns an overall record of 194-78 in his 10 seasons in Tucson with seven NCAA Tournament appearances. He is a three-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year (2019, 2021, 2024) and two-time ITA Southwest Region Coach of the Year (2019, 2024). Prior to arriving at Arizona, Shields spent three seasons as the head coach at Utah State, earning Mountain West Coach of the Year honors in 2016.
