SAN DIEGO, Calif.- Sophomore Lindsay Blau and junior Michelle Gough captured
the Flight A doubles championship Saturday at the San Diego State
Invitational. The duo captured the title by defeating UC-Santa Barbara's
duo of Cindy Amann and Shannon Wilkins in the semifinals, 8-2 and outlasted
the team of Zuzana Lesenarova and Kataryna Valkyova of San Diego, 8-6 in
the finals.
In other Flight A doubles competition, freshman Siri Fomsgaard and senior
Vanessa Abel fell to Lesenarova and Valkyova , 8-1 but then rebounded to
win their match against Santa Barbara's Amann and Wilkins, 8-2.
In Flight B action, sophomores Carly Stringer and Laresa Marino split their
two matches on the day losing to San Diego State's Lisa Papi and Julie
Chidley in their first match, 8-4 and bounced back in their second match
defeating San Diego's Heather Polumbus and Stacy Lee, 8-4. The tandem of
freshman Uzma Khan and junior Joanna Buczkowska won their opening match of
the day defeating Polumbus and Lee, 8-5 and dropped their second match to
Papi and Chidley, 8-5.
In singles competition in the Flight A bracket, Blau was outlasted by Cyndi
Amann of Sant Barbara, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 while Gough advanced by default over
Shannon Wilkins of San Diego State.
In Flight B action, San Diego State's Katja Karrento downed Buczkowska,
6-4, 3-6 while Abel was victorious in her match with Santa Barbara's Jill
Katzenberger, 6-1, 6-0.
In Flight C competition, Khan outlasted teammate Stringer, 6-1, 7-6 (5),
moving her into the championship match. In the other match, Marino was
victorious in her match with San Diego's Heather Polumbus, 6-1, 6-4.
In Flight D action, Chidley defeated Stringer, 6-2, 2-6 and fellow teammate
sophomore Brooke Taylor defeated San Diego State's Emelie Bengsston to move
into the championship match of the bracket.
Competition concludes at the San Diego State Invitational Sunday.
