TUCSON, Ariz.- Six of Arizona's nine singles players and all three doubles
team advanced on the first day at the San Diego State Invitational Friday.
In Flight A singles competition, sophomore Lindsay Blau and junior Michelle
Gough fell respectively to top 25 players in the nation. Blau was defeated
by the No. 1 player in the nation, Zuzana Lesenarova of San Diego, 2-6, 3-6
while Michelle Gough fell to the No. 25-ranked Katarina Valkyova of San
Diego, 6-1, 3-6, 3-6.
In Flight B competition, Arizona senior Vanessa Abel dropped her match to Lindsey
Hedberg of San Diego State, 2-6, 2-6. In the other Flight B match, junior
Joanna Buczkowska defeated Laura Aguero of San Diego State, 6-4, 6-3.
In Flight C competition, the Wildcats swept their three matches. Sophomore
Carly Stringer outlasted Gaby Andrade of Santa Barbara, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
Freshman Uzma Khan was victorious in her match with Lisa Papi of San Diego
State defeating her in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (5). In the third match,
sophomore Laresa Marino defeated Kaley Becker, 6-4, 6-2.
In Flight B competition, freshman Siri Fomsgaard and sophomore Brooke
Taylor advanced to the quarterfinal round. Fomsgaard topped Tracy Keyser of
Santa Barbara, 6-4, 6-2 while Taylor defeated San Diego's Ann Sepi, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles competition, all three of Arizona's teams advance to the
semifinal round.
In Flight A competition, Abel and Fomsgaard outlasted Whitney Wells and
Katja Karrento of San Diego State, 8-1. In the other Flight A match for the
Wildcats, Blau and Gough topped Joni Seymour and Liz Yim of UC-Irvine, 8-2.
In Flight B action, Stringer and Marino were victorious in their match with
Keyser and Melissa Dillard, 8-1. Taylor teamed up with San Diego's Erica
Pyne and fell to San Diego State's Papi and Julie Chidley, 0-8. Khan and
Buczkowska defeated Santa Barbara's Jill Katzenberger and Andrade, 8-1.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday for the second day of the tournament.
