Williamsburg, Va.- After completing a successful day of doubles
competition, Arizona didn't fare so well in singles competition Saturday at
the William and Mary Invitational. All seven of the Wildcats who competed
in singles action were unable to advance to the first round of the winners
bracket.
Sophomore Lindsay Blau dropped her first round match to the 14th-ranked
Megan Miller of Duke, 3-6, 1-6. Blau faced Lorraine Bittles of Maryland and
bounced back winning, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.
Junior Michelle Gough suffered a similar fate, ending up on the losing end
in her opening round match with 74th- ranked Andrea Ondrisova of Virginia
Commonwealth, 4-6, 6-3, 1-6. Gough rebounded in the consolation bracket
outlasting Richmond's Janelle Williams, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6.
Senior Vanessa Abel's fate in her single's matches mirrored that of Gough
and Blau. Abel fell to 70th-ranked Erica Biro of Duke, 1-6, 7-6. The senior
hooked up with William and Mary's Jessyca Arthur in the opening round
consolation match and was victorious in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Sophomore Carly Stringer dropped both of her singles matches Saturday
losing to Maryland's Jessica Johnson, 2-6, 2-6, and Virginia Commonwealth's
Lemka Zacharova, 6-4, 4-6, 1-6. Sophomore Brooke Taylor was also unable to
win any of her two singles matches on the day. Taylor was defeated by Anne
Marie Milton of Wake Forest, 2-6, 4-6, and Richmond's Monica Peets, 6-7,
6-4, 5-7.
Junior Joanna Buczkowska received an opening round bye but was unable to
get past the second round falling to Wake Forest's Lea Miller, 1-6, 3-6.
In indoor singles action, freshman Siri Fomsgaard, was not victorious in
her two matches, losing to William and Mary's Kelli Partlow, 2-6, 1-6, and
Virginia Commonwealth's Kate Vasylyeva, 6-7, 1-6.
In Flight A consolation doubles action, Blau and Gough defeated Maryland's
Jessica Johnson and Lorraine Bittles, 8-4. Abel and Fomsgaard were not as
fortunate in their match falling to Megan Miller and Kathy Sell of Duke, 4-8.
