University of Arizona junior center Loren Woods was named Pacific-10
Conference men's basketball player of the week today, following his
performances that led the Wildcats to a weekend sweep of Washington State
and Washington.
In the two games, Woods scored 47 points, pulled down 17 rebounds and
blocked 15 shots (23.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 7.5 bpg). He was 16-of-36 from the
floor and 15-of-19 from the free throw line, while averaging 38.5 minutes
per game.
In Thursday's win over Washington State, Woods set a school record with 10
blocks, breaking the record of seven set by Anthony Cook in 1987 and tied
by Woods three times earlier in the year. He also scored a career-high 25
points and had six rebounds and a steal. He was 9-of-9 from the free throw
line in the game.
Against Washington on Saturday, Woods scored a game-high 22 points to go
with 11 rebounds and five blocked shots. He played 39 minutes, also a
career high, and was 8-of-19 from the field and 6-of-10 from the free throw
line. Woods' performance was his fifth double-double of the season.
Woods is the second Arizona player to win the Pac-10 award this year.
Sophomore forward Michael Wright won the honor Dec. 6, 1999 after the
Wildcats beat Brigham Young and Texas.
