EUGENE ,Ore. - The first ranked Arizona women's golf team captured its fourth Pac-10 title today at the Eugene Country Club Golf Course (par-72, 5,557 yards). The Wildcats, shooting a three-day team total of 19-over-par 883, finished 18 strokes ahead of second place Stanford. The Cardinal shot a 9-over-par 297 today to bring them up two spots from yesterday. UCLA ended in third place with a 39-over-par 903. California (40-over-par 904) and Southern California (42-over-par 906) finished fourth and fifth.
"I'm very excited," said coach Todd McKorkle. "I can't say I expected us to win, but every match we've played well down the stretch."
Individually for the Wildcats, senior Jenna Daniels came back and shot a tournament low of 4-under-par 68 today to finish second after being tied for 15th going into today's final round. Daniels finished the tournament with a three day score of 3-over-par 219. Sophomore Cristina Baena captured third place, jumping six spots from yesterday, shooting her tournament best 1-under-par 71 on the final day of play to bring her three day total to 4-over-par 220. Tied for fourth place was senior Jill Gomric. Gomric carded a 3-over-par 75 today bringing her final score to a 5-over-par 221. Freshman Julia Kraschinski tied for 14th and she finished her first Pac-10 tournament with a total score of 10-over-par 226, while junior Christina Monteiro tied for 26th at 15-over-par 231.
Competing as an individual in her first Pac-10 tournament was freshman Anne Lee, who tied for 26th after posting a three day total of 15-over-par 231.
Capturing the individual title was USC's Candie Kung, who shot a three day total of 2-over-par 218. USC freshman Mikaela Parmlid and Kung initially finished the tournament in a playoff with Parmlid as the winner. However after Parmlid signed an incorrect scorecard she was disqualified from the tournament. Rounding out the top-five individuals were Daniels, Baena and UCLA's Amanda Moltke-Leth who tied for fourth with Gomric.
The next action for the Wildcats will take place at the NCAA West Regionals, which are being held in Tempe, Ariz. May 11-13.
