Box Score
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Junior left-hander Rob Henkel allowed just one hit
through seven innings, while relievers Mike Kunes and Scott Arrasmith retired
the sides in order in the eighth and ninth, as the UCLA baseball team blanked
Arizona 10-0 in the second game of a three-game Pac-10 series Sunday afternoon
at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bruins take a 2-0 lead in the series and improve to 33-22 overall, 15-5 in
the Pac-10. Arizona falls to 22-27 overall, 7-13 in league action.
The last one-hitter thrown by the Bruins came vs. Hawaii-Hilo on April 13, 1998
as Tony Righetti went the distance for the 16-0 win. Sunday's victory also
marks the first shutout for the UCLA pitching staff this season, and first since
a 15-0 victory over Oregon State in Westwood in May 8, 1999.
Henkel (6-2) pitched a masterful seven innings, surrendering just one hit by
Arizona third baseman Erik Torres in the fourth inning. Only one Wildcat
baserunner reached second base during the entire game, the lead-off batter Troy
Gingrich, who walked and stole second in the first inning. Henkel struck out
13, including the side in the fourth and two in each of the first, second, sixth
and seventh innings.
Kunes pitched the eighth inning, and Arrasmith the ninth, both retiring all
three batters they faced. Arizona starter Rob Shabansky (3-5) suffered the
loss, allowing seven runs on six hits through one inning. Today's game marked
the first time Arizona has been shut out this season.
UCLA junior left-fielder Bill Scott was 3-for-3, including his Pac-10 leading
100th hit of the season in the eighth inning. Junior catcher Forrest Johnson
provided much of the run support with a three-run home run in the first inning,
his 21st of the season. Johnson also drove in another run in the second on a
bases loaded fielder's choice. The Bruins racked up 15 hits, but only one for
extra bases on Johnson's long ball.
After taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning, the Bruins added four more in the
second on five singles, a walk and a fielder's choice. Junior second baseman
Chase Utley, junior first baseman Garrett Atkins and sophomore designated hitter
Adam Berry each had run-scoring singles to give UCLA a 7-0 lead after just two
innings.
In the fourth inning, junior center fielder Charles Merricks singled in Scott
who led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Singles by
sophomore third baseman Randall Shelley and junior shortstop Josh Canales,
followed by a fielder's choice by junior right fielder Matt Pearl added another
run in the seventh. Shelley then also singled in Scott with the Bruins' 10th
run in the eighth.
Rob Elias came in for relief of Shabansky in the second inning, allowing just
two runs on seven hits through 5.2 innings. Johnson and Atkins both extended
their season-high hit streaks to 15 games for the Bruins, while Gingrich had his
16-game hit streak snapped for Arizona.
The Bruins and Wildcats wrap up the series tomorrow at Jackie Robinson Stadium
with a 6 p.m. start time. In the last regular season game at home for UCLA,
junior lefty Bobby Roe will get the starting nod and will face Arizona
left-hander Tony Milo.
